In many cases, it’s thrilling…”

-
Cody Brown - A Public Can Talk To Itself: Why The Future of News is Actually Pretty Clear

This is a long read, but it’s interesting.

My response:

You say thrilling, I’d say scary as hell… You touch on the fact that bloggers can and should be biased, but people are too lazy and stubborn to go read the opposition. If a radical blogger says something untrue, how will the lazy radical followers (who are happily outraged) ever know any different (see Glen Beck).

You say that news outlets need to provide space for the public to tell each other, bou still have a set of “trustees” deciding who in the public is going to have a voice today or not… otherwise what you propose is simply the internet.

People aren’t motivated enough to search through all the different opinions and ideas to form an “educated opinion”. Some people may do that, but they’re the minority.

Lastly, there is something I believe to be valuable in journalism today that this ideology leaves out; and that is informing people of news they need to know, but don’t necessarily “care about”. Katie Couric said something when she took over the evening news and I ask that you think about the meaning without regard to the context from the person who said it…. “I have a big job to do. The biggest job isn’t telling people what happened. It’s getting them to understand why they should care.”

You may disagree with a thought like that, but the truth is that people need to be fed this stuff sometimes… there are too many people in this country who couldn’t care less about politics. They ignore election stories and news about new bills. We need people to be informed, even on things they “don’t care about”.

I do agree with a lot of the points made in this article and that there is a new way of doing things, but having a free marketplace for gossip and slander is a terrifyng idea… don’t believe me? Check out the user comments (that aren’t censored or approved) on news organization’s websites.

Inbox Zero

Inbox Zero

Inbox Zero

Inbox Zero

GameSpy: GameSpy's 25 Favorite PC Games of the '90s - Page 1

GameSpy: GameSpy's 25 Favorite PC Games of the '90s - Page 1:
I played over half of these.
